          Sometimes, students of A Course in Miracles get so caught up in theory, in understanding the books, in looking at ego or with changes in their values, with things falling away, discomfort, new experiences, sometimes mystical experiences, and with trying to reach the real world, Spirit-consciousness, that they forget what it’s all about—God, Reality, Truth. In other words, they get caught up in their own experiences, their own story, they forget the bigger picture, they get caught up in the effects and forget the Cause.   Truth, God, has come to your awareness and has led you to new ideas and maybe has shaken up consciousness and even the person’s world in ways that are always interesting and when lovely, exciting, but when uncomfortable, dismaying. Some are distracted from God by lovely new experiences, ideas, and people, because it feels good and in time, they lose sight of God, and the “good stuff” also fades because they’ve lost touch with...

             One of the hazards of a spiritual journey is the attempt by ego to use it to avoid facing the painful memories, ideas, and beliefs in your mind. The initial “honeymoon phase” when the Light comes and all is love and peace and joy   make some believe they have arrived and there is nothing left to do. But that’s just the start. Soon, they slam into the wall of their own deep belief that ego-consciousness is real. Every student of the Course becomes aware of the pendulum swing: You have an experience of Spirit, be it mystical or even just getting and answer or insight and this is followed by what I call an ego backlash . This is typical of any spiritual path as your mind swings between its sense it has two realities, ego and Spirit. Over time, as you recognize what is going on, and grow your awareness of Spirit, the swing shortens, and the backlash is less intense. But as long as ego is in your mind, this will occur. Forgive A Course in Miracles for not being perfect. No spiritual teaching is. One source of confusion is its imprecise use of terms. For example, the term Son of God may refer to consciousness in its identification with ego, consciousness as the learner or decision maker, or Christ, which is not consciousness at all! Why would it use one term for all of these? Because of your experience of “I”, which does not change but can shift in its application. It is always speaking to that “I” and sometimes that “I” is right where you are, sometimes it is where you were, and sometimes it is where you will be. The Course remains the same while you change and you must learn to discern what applies to you, what no longer applies, and what does not yet apply. There’s value in the Course’s imprecision in that you are forced to turn to Spirit when you do not understand, or your reading leads to an increase in guilt and fear—the sure sign that you are misreading it.
