Ask: How can we be in relationships without reinforcing illusion?

         “I have been talking to fellow ACIM students, and we all discuss the following question: How can we have relationships in the world (seeming) with people who are not ACIM students, without assuming the persona of the illusory, separate small-s self?  If we do engage at the small-s self level, are we teaching our brothers/sisters that the separation is real, and therefore reinforcing our own learning of this illusion?” – MG

 In Spirit-consciousness, you experience a person, but you do not identify with it. So, relationships are experienced as all the same, no matter if their outward forms are different or whether the other is a student of A Course in Miracles. You go through the motions of relationships with detachment, knowing only God is real, and everything in consciousness passes, as does consciousness itself. It is an illusion.

This is automatic in Spirit-consciousness and does not require effort or practice.

Until you are in Spirit-consciousness, you will identify with the person. You will be in relationships through ego or Spirit, depending on what it feels like you choose, seeming to teach yourself that either ego or Spirit is real. You can appear to choose Spirit’s guidance in your relationships more and more, and in time the line between you and Spirit will appear to blur.

You never really teach others, as they are doing the same—teaching themselves by the choice they seem to make.

If the World Isn't Real, Why Ask For Guidance?

Every now and then a student asks me why they should follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance if the world isn’t real and if it has nothing to do with God. What difference does it make how you live in the world, then? All that you made can serve salvation easily and well. The Son of God can make no choice the Holy Spirit cannot employ on his behalf, and not against himself. (T-25.VI.7) The world is your perception that you are separate from God. More on Emotional Satisfaction or Freedom
