About Responsibility, Choice, and No Private Thoughts

When you dream at night, you are never actually in the dream. All the dream figures are in your mind. One figure may represent you but is not actually you. You are the dreamer dreaming, which means you are only watching the dream . And so it is with consciousness. It can be likened to one dream with one dreamer where none of the figures in the dream are the actual dreamer, although all are in the mind of the dreamer, and some may come to represent the dreamer. So spiritual awakening means becoming aware that you are the dreamer of the dream and while consciousness occurs in your mind you are never actually in consciousness.   “Awareness of dreaming is the real function of God's teachers. They watch the dream figures come and go, shift and change, suffer and die. Yet they are not deceived by what they see.” (M-12.6)   The spiritual practice of watching your mind is meant to open you to the possibility of your mind slippi...

Sorting Out Spirit, Consciousness, and Ego

As the shift in consciousness approached this mind, ego began to be sorted out from consciousness. This process continued through the shift and is still ongoing five years later. It began with this mind recognizing that the person’s body and personality were neutral. For example, sometimes a client will say something like, “I really like strawberry ice cream—I know that’s ego…” Well, no, that’s not ego, that’s simply an expression of the personality, which is a neutral expression of consciousness. What would be ego would be insisting that you get the last of the strawberry ice cream when someone else wants it instead of sharing it with them or letting them have it all in the recognition it’s not important. Ego shows up as attachment to forms, identification with them, and the belief that forms are your supply, that they make you whole. “ Consciousness is the receptive mechanism, receiving messages from above or below; from the Holy Sp...

Consciousness Is A Multiverse

Every now and then someone brings up the idea of a multiverse to me, this being the idea there are universes other than the one we seem to be in. There are variations on this theory, the most common being parallel universes where all the same things are in other universes as in this universe but it is unfolding differently, implying there are infinite versions of the person with which you may still identify, infinite ways their life unfolds. I say consciousness is a multiverse and other universes are right here, right in front of you. Each expression of consciousness (person) is in their own universe. Does anyone see your person the way you see your person? Does anyone remember or interpret your person’s life the way you do? Have you ever met someone who shares your point of view on everything? There are as many variations of the universe as there are minds that think about it. There are as many variations of your person as there are pe...

You Are the Power Behind Ego

A reader has asked me to write about this passage from A Course in Miracles :   “Every system of thought must have a starting point. It begins with either a making or a creating, a difference we have already discussed. Their resemblance lies in their power as foundations. Their difference lies in what rests upon them. Both are cornerstones for systems of belief by which one lives. It is a mistake to believe that a thought system based on lies is weak. Nothing made by a child of God is without power. It is essential to realize this, because otherwise you will be unable to escape from the prison you have made.” (T-3.VII.1)   Often a client will say to me, “If ego is false, why is it so powerful?” Or, “If ego is only an idea, why is it so powerful?” Ego, or the idea that consciousness, a seeming alternate reality to God, is real, is not powerful. It is the mind behind the belief in the idea that is powerful. So, when ego strike...
