You Don't Have to Analyze Your Projections

I said before that what you project or extend is up to you, but you must do one or the other, for that is a law of mind, and you must look in before you look out. As you look in, you choose the guide for seeing. And then you look out and behold his witnesses. (T-12.VII.7)

It is the law of mind that it always looks within first and then looks outward at a reflection of itself. This is what A Course in Miracles calls “extension” and it is the way that Spirit thinks naturally. Spirit looks within and sees Love and so it sees (extends) Love everywhere.

The ego cannot escape this law so it uses denial as a way of dealing with it. It is essential for the ego’s survival that you believe that you are guilty for separating from God. If you looked within and found the guilt there you would seek for a way to undo it. So it “projects” the guilt away from you onto the world or others. This keeps guilt in your mind because projection does not actually get rid of guilt, it only hides it from your awareness.

When you learn about projection the ego teaches you to analyze every little projection you are making as a way to maintain your sense of guilt. So you think Bob is fat? You must think you are fat. You think Jane is an angry person? You must be an angry person. You hate conservatives? You must be a closet conservative. Does this undo your guilt? No! It only makes it real to you in a conscious way. Analyzing your projections holds the separation in your mind and so you will inevitably continue to feel lack and guilt and fear.

The specific forms your ego’s projections take do not matter because their content is all the same. They are your own call for love seen “out there”. The ego will always project and it will always speak first but you do not have to listen. You can answer your own call for love by ignoring your ego and extending love and Oneness instead. So your ego thinks Bob is fat? See God in Bob instead because God is in your mind and so is Bob. Your ego thinks Jane is an angry person? You can remember for her that there is nothing to fear and she is always in God, as you are. Your ego hates conservatives? You are whole and complete, eternally a Part of God. What are politics but a distraction from that?

The only appropriate response to any projection, no matter its form, is to extend love instead. This is how you surround yourself with God’s Love and feel whole and complete again.

What you project or extend is real for you. (T-7.II.2)

Thank you so much for your clear explanation of projection.I have been studying the Course for most of 6 years and just couldn't grasp that concept. I just found your website and have been devouring it. For a long time I knew the Course was the answer but got so bogged down with the language and back off for a while in frustration. Words cannot express my apprediation!
Thanks for creating this blogspot and offering short topics, with the explanation of those topics. This is allowing me the opportunity to gain clarity on specific subjects. If I am understanding you correctly my projection or negative opinions of others is simple my call for love. Therefore I need to find ways to offer love to myself" not in an egotistical way but from the true perspective of who I am" and thus I will be able to extend that love.

Thank you for posting this. I've found that a lot of so-called "Course teachers" will try to teach you exactly that, to analyze by saying "Oh you think blank is this or that so you must be" after reading your posts here I'm beginning to doubt the validity of a lot of so-called "teachers"
