The Roving "I"

As Spirit has taken center in consciousness here and ego continues to fall away, consciousness, ego, and Spirit have been sorted out. The “I” of ego (yes, this is redundant) seemed concrete, and was in fact projected onto a concrete form, the person called Liz. But Liz’s body, personality, and attributes are only neutral expressions of consciousness, so she and ego are not the same.

Although that strong sense of identity belonged only to ego, the “I” stated by consciousness here has never belonged to only ego. Sometimes the term has been used by Spirit.

Ego strongly asserts an “I” and seeks constantly for its validation. But Spirit merely observes and sometimes teaches, which is as close as It gets to asserting Itself. The term “I” is used by both ego and Spirit, and can vacillate quickly between them, so it can seem there is only one “I”. For example, a question may arise in consciousness from ego and is answered by Spirit. Often, the Answerer is not recognized as different from the questioner. Spirit is active in every mind, even before one discerns It apart from ego.

“Where am I in all this?” has been a question in consciousness here ever since it shifted from ego- to Spirit-consciousness. The source of the question has come from the strong sense of identity that was here from the start. It is ego trying to land its “I” somewhere in the new paradigm, on either consciousness or Spirit. But that strong sense of identity is now revealed to be wholly false, and it isn’t going to land anywhere. It continues to fall away.

The “I” roving between ego and Spirit causes confusion because there is only one symbol for an individuated consciousness, a person. Consciousness arose to be the “stage” on which the idea of not-God plays out and it was shaped for ego, even though Spirit has always been a part of consciousness. Ego’s domination of consciousness means its personal structures, point of view, and language are not actually appropriate for Spirit. Without ego, consciousness here is either a neutral empty space or filled with Spirit Seeing Spirit (Love, Unity, etc.). But while not really an identity or self, Spirit must use what is available, like the term “I”.

Ego identifies with consciousness (specifically, a person), so they seem the same. It also projects its identification with consciousness onto consciousness so that, in ego, it seems consciousness identifies with ego. But Spirit is merely here with consciousness, coexisting with it in a gentle, temporary union. As the symbol of consciousness, the person represents whatever is in consciousness in the moment, ego or Spirit.

Jesus is quoted as saying, “I and the Father are one.” This “I” refers to Christ, not the man. Oh, how much confusion has occurred because of the roving “I”! What he meant was, “God’s Spirit is here in consciousness now. Know this is possible.”

So often advanced teachers down through the ages have said, “Do not look at this body and what it does. That is not me. I am not coming from that. Listen to what I say. Discern that I am coming from beyond.” For Spirit, the person is a communication device and that is all. And the term “I” is merely a matter of what is available and convenient for easy communication.

Chapter 17 Bringing Fantasy to Truth
1. A SILENT Truth.
2. A false dream created and seemingly accomplished by a mind as powerful as the power of spirit.
3. A dream so real it is IMPOSSIBLE for man to believe it is not so.
4. Everyday in fantasy strengthens the dream against a SILENT spirit.
5. We KNOW our personal minds are more powerful than a silent Holy Spirit.

A silent spirit. Our silent God. A hurricane of madness facing silent spirit. A cry for help to a spirit who can't enter this wind storm.

These are extremely tough concepts we come up against in the Course. Seemingly insurmountable when presented as they are above.
We are in great need from those who go before us to lead the way with simple and understand directions. Liz is offering a workshop that takes us out of this mental trap to a place where healing can take place. We are in need of as many of these types of things as possible. They are not places where the personal mind teaches. They are openings for that silent spirit to be heard.
