Your Teacher is Within You

Here again you see the opposite of the ego's way of looking, for the ego believes the situation brings the experience. The Holy Spirit knows that the situation is as the goal determines it, and is experienced according to the goal. (T-17.6.5)

The ego teaches that the external event or thing makes you feel or learn something. The person, the book, the teacher, the situation – all of these somehow conjure up an internal experience in you. You are a passive learner being taught from “out there”.

The Holy Spirit teaches that you can learn from everything not because everything has something to teach, but because your teacher is within you. What you learn is not determined by anything “out there” but by your own goal. If you want to learn you are separate from God you will listen to the voice for separation within you – ego. If you want to remember you are One with God, you will listen to the Voice for God within you – the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes students are afraid they will be misled so they avoid certain books or teachers, or even situations, fearing that they will be drawn off their spiritual path. But all of these things are neutral and have no meaning but the meaning you give them. If you are open to the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit will use everything to teach you. I have learned from fiction and non-fiction books, from other people’s stories, from movies and television and from ordinary situations in my life. Often the Holy Spirit teaches through contrasts. For example, I have read spiritual books that were not in line with the Course. The contrast often made what the Course was teaching clearer to me. You don’t have to go out of your way to find things to learn from, but if you feel drawn to a book or teacher or whatever, go there and bring the Holy Spirit with you. You cannot be lost because the Teacher is not “out there” but within you.

If you could accept the world as meaningless and let the truth be written upon it for you, it would make you indescribably happy. (T-12.5)
