A Miracle to Share

The Holy Spirit always answers us, but not always in the way that we expect. Miracles happen to us all the time and we often do not see them until we have had some distance from them.

A student of mine, who I will call T, has given me permission to share a miracle that happened for her. It is a typical, everyday miracle – if this can be said about miracles -- and I want to share it because of this.

T had a man in her life – who I will call Q -- who treated her poorly over several years. For reasons even she could not fathom she continued to be drawn to him. He was once again back in her life and she decided this time to practice what the Course teaches and try to see Christ in him. She would report to me that nothing was changing. Then one day she went to his home and found that he had gone away – for four months! He had not said a word to her yet apparently several other people knew he was leaving. And the friend of Q’s who told her Q was gone was surprised when he met T – she was not what he would have expected from the way Q talked about her.

Some of your greatest advances you have judged as failures, and some of your deepest retreats you have evaluated as success. (T-18.V.1)

T was devastated and called me. She felt like such a fool – again. At first I was caught up in what she was saying, and then it hit me like a thunderbolt: This was a miracle! The purpose for any relationship is to see Christ in the other. When we have sincerely chosen this, even if we do not think we have succeeded, one of two things will happen: The relationship will be transformed for the better or the person will fall away from our lives.

I explained this to T and she eventually saw this for herself. At first her ego kept going off on how it happened – she felt humiliated – but now she realizes it happened in a way that was necessary for her to get the lesson.

So why is this a miracle? Was Q’s leaving the miracle? No. It was T’s choice to see Christ in him that was the miracle. It was a choice to forgive the illusion of separation and remember Oneness. Q’s leaving was the result of this choice because he had served his purpose in T’s life: Through her relationship with him, T learned forgiveness, the only lesson for all relationships. If he was needed to help T fulfill her purpose in the world he would have remained in her life in a transformed relationship. This was also a miracle of healing because a source of pain – Q – was removed from T’s life. By choosing to see Christ in him instead of a body/ego, T was choosing healing of her misperception that she needed this abusive man in her life.

Miracles honor you because you are lovable. They dispel illusions about yourself and perceive the light in you. They thus atone for your errors by freeing you from your nightmares. By releasing your mind from the imprisonment of your illusions, they restore your sanity. (T-1.I.33)

Liz,

I had thought miracles did not change or influence anything in the dream. Not financial problems, relationships, health, jobs etc.

Hi Will,
I can't answer for Liz, but I think I can understand now that nothing really does change, just our perceptions of the world.
If you are financially poor in the world and unhappy because of it, if your perception came to see "poverty" as a blessing, you would sense abundance and feel joyful instead. Nothing has actually changed financially, just your mind's perception of the world. In Reality, money is completely meaningless anyway, but here in the world we use it to identify ourselves. If we could come to See it's meaninglessness, we would be rich and joyful with or without it, and that could lead to abundance as a result.
Namaste,
Janet
